Using Video to Market Your Company

I know it seems apparent but I just had one of those “no duh” moments. It hit me big time that the more interactive you make what you do, the more likely it is that someone will buy it or will use your services. Why aren’t we doing more of this?

Where did this  brain drizzle come from?

My wife is a “cat nut”.  It’s everything feline and, since I love my wife and want to be with her, I have learned to accommodate. Therefore, we now have three “inside cats” and one “outside cat” (referred to as such because, well, she lives outside).

Smokey, as we’ve grown to call her, is a beautiful Birman cat. We think someone abandoned her because for the last several months she has been living in our backyard so, we’ve started to take care of her by feedling her. She seems to enjoy this because she’s even let me pick her up now and then.  However, as for coming into the house: not yet. Between the other three cats and the proliferation of cat hair everywhere, it:

  • a) Does not seem smart for us
  • b) Is not something Smokey seems inclined to do.

However, with the cold weather lately, we wanted to figure out something we could do to help her stay warm on these cold nights. We looked on line and found (pardon the expression) “cat houses” that we could use but since we didn’t want to spend upwards of a few hundred dollars, we had to find an alternative method.

Spay and Stay to the rescue

Through the magic of Google, my wife discovered SpayAndStay.org. Their mission:

“Spay and Stay is made up of a diverse group of people who all agree on one thing — that together we can make a difference in the lives of feral and stray cats in our communities.”

On their site, they have instructions for an inexpensive shelter that one can make from:

  • A couple of tubs
  • A tube
  • Styrofoam
  • Hay

It set us back about $50 and we’re not sure Smokey is keen on the idea yet but it’s something we decided to do. And, as we did it, we decided — what the heck — might as well document how we made it. Finally, because I don’t have a real life (and I was trying to learn how to use iMovie 08 — which is not as good as iMovie HD 06), we made this little “how to” film.

How does this apply to marketing?

Doesn’t everything? Well, I guess not. But, as I’m making this video, I’m thinking to myself, “What a great technique to really show off a product!” I know, I know, I’m not the first person in the world to come up with this (obviously) but as opposed to using the web to list features, benefits, and maybe throw in a few pictures; it’s so simply by using YouTube and a Flip Camera to throw together a simple video and post it where everyone can see it, that I’m wondering why I have not been doing more of it?

Just a thought. A great way to reach customers and let them really see what you’re doing.
